Speciality eggs packaging using recycled materials

An alternative packaging solution that performs in every respect

Fresh GUARD EnVision packaging revolutionizes specialized egg packaging with an innovative design that goes beyond mere protection. Traditionally, specialty eggs have been packaged in plastic clamshells with flaps, particularly in the North American market. Cascades asked us to develop a packaging solution made from 100% recycled fibers to improve egg visibility and protection, enhance brand presence on the shelf and optimize packaging operations.

Our goal was to create an emotional connection between users and the brand by offering a positive product experience. Extensive research and user testing provided a clear understanding of the product’s needs and aspects to validate the chosen solution. The final packaging meets the needs of consumers while considering the constraints experienced by processors and retailers.

Uncompromising performance

The packaging consists of two parts made from 100% recycled fibers. A deep tray made of molded pulp hugs the shape of the 12 eggs to prevent any impact. To retrieve them, the user simply slides the tray out of a cardboard sleeve, pulling it slightly to access the first eggs, then further to reach those in the center of the tray.

For the processor, the tray is generic, with no markings, enabling all types of eggs of different sizes to be packaged. The tray is then wrapped around the sleeve, which reinforces the packaging while offering four customizable marking faces. The new packaging was sent to production and can be easily integrated into processors’ day-to-day operations.

For retailers, the new printed sleeve offers 95% more display area compared with a conventional molded dough flap package. Fresh GUARD EnVision™ amplifies the product’s visual impact on displays, especially on the side faces.

Visibility in many forms

The “wow” effect of egg packaging relies on the visibility of the condition of the eggs. The objective was to enable this verification in a package made of opaque materials, i.e. cellulose pulp and cardboard.

The chosen solution, an openwork cardboard sleeve slipped over a pulp shell, makes the 12 eggs visible without having to open the packaging, while preserving the printed information.

This packaging thus offers an alternative to consumers wishing to buy plastic-free packaging. Traditional plastic clamshells allow the eggs to be seen from the sides, but require an additional paper insert to display product information.
